When I first saw the high volume Spring fashions hit the runways for the couture shows my first thought was “oh no.” As a short, curvy girl I spend a lot of effort trying to NOT look like I take up a lot of space. As gorgeous as the models looked in the huge maxis, wide trousers, and giant sleeves I wasn’t sure I could pull off the look.
The Outfit Inspiration
For inspiration I looked at the hippy-style printed maxi dresses from Gucci’s Epilogue collection along with featuring Spring 2021’s must have color: yellow. The Fall runway shows featured 70s prints, tiered or full skirts, and lots of volume. My goal was to create a budget friendly look that captured the vibes of the runway looks while still being wearable.

How to Style a High Volume Maxi Dress
The good news is that if I can find a mega-maxi I love you can too! I selected this ankle length maxi from Amazon in a beautiful yellow floral pattern. As always, the devil is in the details and how you accessorize it. I’m 5’4” and I feel my frame can quickly be swallowed up in a super full dress. To avoid that, I belted mine to accentuate my waist and create a horizontal line. A fitted denim jacket adds structure to keep the look boho-chic rather than frumpy. I kept my accessories simple: a gold disk necklace and yellow leather earrings.
Update- the original yellow dress sold out but there are other colors of this dress available here: https://amzn.to/3I0dPuP
I just love the yellow and it immediately makes me feel cheerful. The full skirt makes me want to spin around! Because the dress is already such a bold color I went with a simple Madewell Transport Tote and Jack Rogers sandals to keep it from being too busy. I wanted just the right amount of impact. I also wanted a length that hit around my ankles. I felt if I went floor length I would look like a kid trying to wear her mother’s dress.

Final Thoughts
Even if you are curvy, don’t be afraid to pump up the volume! I felt so girly and fun in this outfit. I like taking chances and stepping out of my comfort zone to find looks I love. I know I’m going to wear this dress on repeat this Spring and Summer! If you choose a bold print keep your accessories simple and don’t forget to add a little definition and structure.
